Mortar Board is fortunate to have exceptional advisors in our chapters across the nation. Advisors are vital to a chapter’s success—with their guidance, students learn the traditions and history of our Society and fulfill the high expectations of Mortar Board members.
Meet Jeff Wright, advisor of the Arktos chapter at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina.

Jeff Wright
What position do you hold at your university? Professor of Economics and MBA Coordinator
What does a typical day include? Teaching between 2 and 4 classes, individual advising with students, at least one committee meeting and attending a student event (often a sport) on campus
How long have you advised your Mortar Board chapter? 2 years (I missed the first year after our chapter was established)
Why or how did you decide you wanted to advise the chapter? In addition to heading the group that brought the Arktos chapter to Lenoir-Rhyne (I have a feeling of “ownership” over the chapter), it is an opportunity to work with a diverse group of students that I normally would never even meet.
What has been your favorite Mortar Board advising experience? Watching the chapter develop its traditions (true student tapping in our first year, a candlelight ceremony the second) and refine its rules and procedures
What have you learned or what advice would you share with other Mortar Board advisors? Let the students run things. It’s their organization (I’ve seen too many student organization advisors who try to control everything). If they’re in charge they will be more apt to contribute to the good of the group.
