Mortar Board’s Virtual Book Drive with First Book: Making an impact against illiteracy

In just one short month our national Virtual Book Drive, held in conjunction with First Book, will conclude! We’ve been working since July to raise as much as we can toward our $30,000 goal. One great aspect of the drive is that just $2 provides a child in need in Mortar Board communities with his or her very own new book.

This is our third annual Virtual Book Drive. In the past two years, we’ve raised $51,065.09 to help fight illiteracy! This year, we’ve already reached $5,480, led by the winner of the last two Virtual Book Drives and this year’s Ruth Weimer Mount Chapter Excellence Award recipient, the Alcor chapter at Hope College.

This is a cause very important to me, and very important to Mortar Board. Our national project has been Reading is Leading since 2002. As outstanding representatives of scholarship, leadership and service on our campuses, it’s only natural that we should give back in this way.

I encourage every Mortar Board chapter to participate in this cause – it’s so easy! Visit www.firstbook.org/mortarboard to make your donation, forward the cause to a friend, and see how your chapter is stacking up against others. It’s not too late to start fundraising; visit our Web site to see some great fundraising ideas that you can implement on your campus.

Together we can do this – let’s raise $30,000 and more!

  1. Illiteracy is a really huge problem nowadays. Good thing there's something being done against it.
